Review of La Plata, Maryland

Great Place to Raise a Family
Star Rating - 5/30/2012
We have lived here for several years now. The schools are good and the teachers have been excellent. There are also several good private schools available. The people are very friendly and there is a small town feel. It is very close to the water, so many people enjoying boating and fishing.

For the DC Metro area, the cost of a home here is relatively inexpensive and many have large lots. The commute time to downtown DC is about an hour. Weekend drives into the city or Alexandria are almost half of that.

For children, the boys and girls club offer football, baseball, soccer. The community college offers an indoor pool year round, as well as enrichment programs over the summer.

Because of the proximity to the water, there are many good seafood restaurants in the area.

The only downside to La Plata is the traffic and congestion in Waldorf.

As a 12-year La Plata resident, I agree with most the above, except the travel times. On weekends, travel to Alexandria takes 45 minutes, and to downtown D.C. a full hour. Weekday rush-hour drives take a full 2 hours to downtown D.C. in horrible traffic. Commuter busses are also available. Many residents instead work at various military bases. As a county seat, La Plata is a full-service town with a court house, a growing hospital,. a walkable main-street, a little-theater, 2 department stores, 3 supermarkets, a Lowe's, a large community-college, varied ethnic restaurants, a country-club, festivals and parades, and even a mosque. Schools are ranked slightly above average. Several high schools and the college have indoor or outdoor public pools.
